8 Reasons to Start Therapy in 2018

Typically at the start of the new year, we are bombarded with January’s craze of diet and exercise.  (By the way, if you are already crushing your fitness goals this year, good for you!)  But what about our mental health?  Isn’t our emotional well-being equally as important?  Isn’t about time that we start to pay just as much attention to our mental health as we do to our physical health?  According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, about 1 in 5 American adults experience mental illness.  Only 41% of those have received mental health treatment in the past year.

There are many reasons why you may be initially hesitant to seek counseling.  Simply the thought of opening up to a complete stranger about deeply personal issues may be enough to make one uncomfortable.  I’d like to remind you that therapists are ethically, morally, and (most importantly) legally bound by confidentiality.  So you can rest assured that your private information will be kept secure.  Furthermore, a strong therapeutic alliance is fueled by a compassionate and unbiased approach so hopefully you can set those fears of judgement aside.

If you are still on the fence, here are a few reasons why you should give therapy a shot:

You Want to Improve and Strengthen Relationships

Relationships are often the first to suffer when we are going through a difficult time.  With the support of a trained professional, you may be able to unravel reasons why relationships and communication patterns have been strained.  Role playing and practicing assertive communication may be helpful approaches in improving your overall social functioning.

You Are Undergoing Change

New ventures can be challenging and it is completely expected to be stressed during these transitional times.  Why not gain a neutral perspective to identify goals and develop strategies to support you during this change?  Talking to a non-judgemental professional may even help normalize and validate your experience with change.

You are Experiencing Unexpected Changes in Mood

If you have recognized any persistent changes in overall mood or overall negative thought patterns, it may be time to consider talking to someone.  A therapist may be able to guide you to the root of the problem and collaborate with you on identifying effective coping strategies.

Changes in Sleeping or Eating Patterns

A major symptom of depression or anxiety includes an overall disruption in sleeping and eating patterns.  If you noticed either an increase or decrease in sleeping and/or eating patterns, it might be time to seek support.

You Just Feel Like You Need to Talk to Someone

It is one of our most basic needs as humans to feel supported and validated.  Therapy can offer just that.  Try not overlook the many benefits of feeling heard and listened to.

Isolating Yourself from People, Places or Things That You Once Enjoyed

Formally known as anhedonia, losing interest in once pleasurable activities may be another warning sign that it is time to take hold of your mental health.

You Want 1hr/wk to Focus on Yourself

This may feel a little selfish at first, but you may thank yourself for taking the time out of your busy schedule to bring the attention and focus on to YOU.  (Natural caretakers and people that constantly give give give, this one is especially for you.)  Not only do you deserve it, but you owe it to yourself!

You Want to Thrive and Feel Good About Yourself

Making self-discoveries and learning about yourself can be such an eye opening and empowering experience, which may lead to an overall improvement in self-esteem.  Therapy can provide a space to focus on you, with support from a trained expert who can guide you towards reaching your goals and being the best version of yourself.
